Chapter Eight

Fin had been a soldier. He’d waded through a couple of awfully stinky places, and he’d encountered a fair share of heavily bleeding injuries. Hell, as an enforcer for Xander, he’d hurt and killed other shifters.

But sitting beside a blood-covered Aaron while he drove Vaughn’s car the fastest way out of Minnesota was another ballgame altogether. He had a hard time trying not to throw up. It wasn’t so much the scent that kept him captive, but the memory of screams and the slurping sounds as Aaron drank his fill.

But no matter how traumatized he felt, Fin was sure the whole experience had been worse for Aaron. The slender man was a picture of misery. They’d left Aaron’s dirty clothes in the woods and secured him in his blanket before shoving him into the car. But he’d gotten blood on his skin as well.

They’d taken the stolen car to the trailhead, quickly switched to their own vehicle, and sped off. Vaughn lay curled up in the backseat, groaning softly whenever Fin drove over a rough patch. “Babe...”

Fin winced. “I’m sorry. We’ll make a medical stop as soon as we’re far enough away from Minnesota.”

“As long as that time comes before I bleed out.”

Despite the gravity of the situation, Fin was glad to hear humor in Vaughn’s voice. “Stop it, you baby. You said it was only a graze.”

“Are you two a couple?” Aaron asked quietly. “How can you be? You’re both so tall and strong.”

Fin threw him a quick glance and found Aaron regarding him with a shy expression. He hoped he and Vaughn hadn’t set themselves up for hero-worship. “Vaughn is my mate,” he said proudly.

“What’s a mate?” Aaron’s delicate blond brows knitted.

Vaughn coughed from the backseat. Fin wondered if it was a cough, a reaction to Fin’s claim, or Aaron’s question. “Uh, have you heard of shifters?”

“Shifters?” Aaron’s eyes widened. “Like the werewolves in the books?”

Vaughn groaned. “Shit. Nobody told you?”

“Told me what?” Aaron’s voice quivered. Although his skin was ghostly pale—probably due to shock—his cheeks glowed a healthy pink.

A side effect of feeding so recently? Finley gripped the steering wheel tighter. “We’ll explain everything to you. But maybe it’s best you tell us how you ended up as one of Taylor’s experiments.”

“My older brother works for Taylor. The doctor made Cross healthy again.” Aaron took a deep, shuddering breath. “I was so happy for him. We grew up poor and never had enough money for health insurance. I’ve always been sickly, even as a kid. Cross was okay until he turned twenty-five.” Aaron sniffled and rubbed a hand over his bloody face. They were in desperate need of a discreet rest stop. “When the doctor’s therapy worked on Cross, he convinced Taylor to treat me as well, although I’m not strong enough to be a guard like my brother. That was Taylor’s condition for treating Cross. My brother had to sign an employment contract.”

If Taylor had made Cross healthy, then he’d been turned and killed people for a living now.
